You could call it a clear case of what happens when you fail to pin down a wandering decimal point.
A couple from Pennsylvania has been locked up on theft charges and for related offenses — all because of a bank glitch.
The funny thing is, they almost got away with it.
Last summer, they made a $1,772.50 deposit at their bank.
When they checked the balance, there was $177,250. Oops.
The couple then established a new bank account and transferred the windfall to it.
Then, they quit their jobs and moved to Florida. They were in the process of buying a house in Orlando when the bank finally put 2 and 2 together — and came up with 4, instead of 400.
Now, they’re being held under $100,000 bail, back in Pennsylvania, and being represented by a public defender.
The wife had a simple explanation for why she didn’t suspect there had been a mistake.
She said her husband often received large checks for installing roofs. She just figured this was for one of his roofing jobs.
Uh-huh. Now that sounds like a snow job.
