One place you don’t want to cut

It can be a little tough right now keeping spirits up among Purchasing/Procurement staffers (like every other area of the company). But there are couple of little “quality of life” tweaks you can easily make that’ll keep Purchasing people focused on the job — which pays off for everyone.

A lot of companies are looking at ways to “trim the fat” or “tighten the belt” in today’s tough economy. That’s understandable. A word of warning: You’ll be helping yourself if you can protect a couple of the little perks from the cost-cutter’s knife.

Three examples:

The soda machine. First of all, don’t get rid of it. But many companies help keep the price a bit lower than market cost by subsidizing each purchase with a few cents. It’s not a cost center or a money-maker. If anything (perish the thought), you might want to drop the price and increase your company’s subsidy. It’s a small, relatively inexpensive move that can speak loudly to staffers about how much you care.

The Joe. Don’t mess with the coffee. Sure, your company can save a few bucks a months by switching over to El Cheapo, but the ill will you sow will far exceed any savings. This one can really blow up in your face. What are employees going to think about their employer if the company can’t even afford decent coffee?

Company perks. Does your company have T-shirts, hats, coffee mugs — anything — with the company logo on it? Give them out freely. These are walking advertisements for the generosity of your company, and help staffers feel good about their employer.
