Fight back — by working ‘simpler’

Most of us have heard the phrase, “Work smarter, not harder.” But what about finding ways to work simpler? The pace in today’s workplace can be overwhelming at times. There’s more to do, less time to do it, and higher expectations.

The result? Many people do what they describe as “multi-tasking.” It’s thought to be an efficient way to get a lot done at once.

News flash: Multi-tasking is less efficient than tackling your challenges one-by-one. It’s best to focus on one situation, resolve the problem or come up with an action step, and then move on to the next situation.

It’s tougher on your brain and concentration if you’re constantly shifting gears.

That’s why some experts now say “working simpler” is far more effective.

Here are seven steps that will help set you on the path toward simplicity:

  1. Write down everything you need to get done.
  2. Using this list, design a reasonable schedule.
  3. Look for projects that can be handled in stages: One part today, one part tomorrow, one part next week, etc.
  4. Have a plan for handling interruptions.
  5. Maintain a “no-rush” attitude, focusing on quality rather than speed.
  6. Remember what’s really important — and what’s not.
  7. Spread around the praise and thank-yous.
